Christians Serving Together

Frequently Asked Questions

The Organization

Big C

Our mission is build partnerships with all Christians, regardless of denomination, to use our spiritual gifts, talents, and resources to serve those in our community who are in need.

Our focus is not on a small collection of local churches.  Instead, we are focused on the entire Body of Christ; no one is excluded.   Our name represents this focus: The Church vs. a church.

“Outreach”

We proactively reach out to those in need, instead of waiting for them to come to us.  We believe this is consistent with the example of Jesus (Luke 19:10; Philippians 2:5-8).

Furthermore, those in the most desperate of circumstances don’t have the ability to come to us even if they wanted to.  We must reach out if we sincerely want to make a lasting difference.

No. However, we are moving in that direction. Stay tuned.

Volunteering

The short answer is, “None.”

In our view, the only acceptable reason to volunteer is that you genuinely want to participate.  There are no obligations, only opportunities.  And if your heart is not in this work, we encourage you to do something that is more important to you.

For us, our involvement in Big C Outreach is an extension of our relationship with God.  We feel God has asked us to love and serve others in some capacity.  Big C Outreach is the vehicle through which we have chosen to be obedient.  Certainly, it’s not the only way.

As your fellow team members, we place no demands on you.  Follow God’s leading, and it will be the perfect amount of time and energy for you.

Not at all! The amazing thing about God is that he does not require us to have a perfect theology or understanding about who he is. We don’t have to be “put together” to have a relationship with him. He invites us to come as we are. So why should we be different?

If you have a desire to serve others and are willing to extend dignity to everyone with whom you interact regardless of their circumstances, we would love to have you!

And as you get to know us better, you will probably discover that some of us struggle with hard questions about faith and Christianity. It is normal, and even healthy, for finite humans to be somewhat uncertain about their understanding of an infinite God.

Come with all of your questions. We have them too! The difference is we’ve chosen to believe.

The best place to start is identifying your spiritual gifts.  We believed that you will find the most satisfaction when you are serving in sync with the way God has made and gifted you.

If you don’t know what your spiritual gifts are, consider taking the Spiritual Gifts Test at https://www.freeshapetest.com/.  What are your strongest 3 or 4 spiritual gifts? And what was your score for each?

Next, what are your interests? Is there a particular group of people or area of service that you feel drawn toward?  That could be God giving you direction.

Do you have any skills, talents, or professional training that you are willing to use while serving with the Big C Outreach?

Finally, what are you most excited about when thinking about serving with Big C Outreach?

If you still have questions about where you fit, let us know.  We are happy to walk through the process with you.  Ultimately, we want you to serve in area where you will thrive.

We understand! At first, it does sound weird. But let’s see if we can make sense of it.

Let’s start with an analogy. If you were a business owner, would you want all of your employees to have the same or similar skills and talents? Or would it be better for your business if your employees had different skills and talents?

The obvious answer is, “Different.” Your company would be better served with a well rounded, diverse work force; and you would want each employee to be extremely good at his or her specialty. Otherwise, the company will suffer, and not be as good as it could be.

It’s kind of like that with God. He relies on his followers, those who have a relationship with him, to do his work. And, he equips us to do the specific things that he wants us to do.

Spiritual gifts are not just natural talents and abilities. They are supernatural. God empowers his followers, through the Holy Spirit, to do certain things exceptionally well so that his work can be done on Earth.

While there are many different gifts, their purpose is always the same: to benefit others and help maximize the effectiveness of the Church (all Christians around the globe) .

To learn more about spiritual gifts, we encourage you to read 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4:11-13, and Romans 12:6-8.  And feel free to reach out to us with questions.

Donations

Big C Outreach is not a 501(C)3 corporation yet.  So we cannot accept cash donations.  However, since we are a partnership of churches, you can make a donation through your local church, which would allow you to receive the tax benefit.

If you aren’t associated with a church, you can make a cash donation through River Run Church.  See our Food Donation page for full details.
